And the Eagle Flew Away…

The final hours of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon

Operation Frequent Wind

Saigon, capital of the Republic of South Vietnam, April 29 and 30, 1975. Over the course of two days, an unbroken ballet of helicopters taking part in Operation Frequent Wind shuttled between Saigon and U.S. Navy ships in the South China Sea, evacuating thousands of American citizens and “high-risk” South Vietnamese, threatened by the advance of Viet Cong forces.

This helicopter evacuation — the first of such scale since World War II — owed its success above all to the professionalism of the Marines on the ground and the courage of the helicopter pilots, who logged more than 1,000 flight hours.

Though experienced as a defeat, Operation Frequent Wind also gave rise to countless acts of bravery and heroism.
